NIMO Symphonic Eurythmy Project

Message from the Representative

Yuko Kobayashi – Representative of NIMO Project

We, the “NIMO Symphonic Eurythmy Project”, have launched in the summer of 2021 in preparation for the performance of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”. Eurythmists from all over Japan are practicing hard to realize the first eurythmy performance by an orchestra in Japan.

In these difficult times, we hope to share with many people through eurythmy the difficulties and courage to “live in spite of,” the hopes and prayers, and the joy of flapping our wings as they become the song of our hearts and the movement of our whole bodies.

In the orchestral eurythmy, we move as “music” created by instruments with different characteristics, such as strings, winds, and percussion. The lighting, based on Goethe’s theory of color, will make you feel as if you are experiencing “the moment when colors are born. We hope you will enjoy the space where the 26-member eurythmy ensemble resonates and weaves in a variety of ways.

Yuko Kobayashi … Project Representative, Artistic Director. Graduated from Eurythmy Spring Valley School. Participated in the Orchestra Eurhythmy performance tour 2005 led by Dorothea Mier, playing oboe and clarinet parts.

Welcome Message

Dorothea Mier – Special Advisor

There used to be a time when there was an eurythmy performance of the symphony in Dornach, Switzerland, every summer, but today, orchestral eurythmy is not an everyday event. It is a very big and special event; a performance involving as many as 26 eurythmists is truly priceless. What a wonderful gift it is to have a project like this.

For those who are seeing eurythmy for the first time, everything may come as a surprise.

There is one trick to watching eurythmy. That is to “watch as you listen. Instead of looking at what each individual eurythmist is doing, look at the movement as a whole in a comprehensive manner. Each eurythmist’s movement is for the good of the whole. Watch, feel, and see where the flow of movement is going from and to.

Let us also keep in mind that eurythmy is different from dance. In dance, the viewer’s eye may focus on the movement of the feet, but in eurythmy, the arms are the center of expression. And one of the characteristics of the movement is not the pursuit of a form, but how the movement of the arms can express the flow of the song as a song.

It is also very important to watch and listen to the movement with your heart. It is a process of asking yourself, “What am I feeling right now? Maybe you will know what you are feeling not during the performance, but after a night’s sleep. As often happens after watching an eurythmy performance, it is only after you have surrendered the experience to sleep that you will experience the reverberating effects of the experience.

Please enjoy this very special performance! (Interview)

In 2005, Lemniscate Arts toured Dvorak’s 9th Symphony, “From the New World” throughout North America with Eurythmy Spring Valley to over 20 cities in North America. This was the first performance of full orchestral eurythmy in 27 years in America. The fully expanded scope of the symphonic eurythmy form reveals musical power and nuance in a way not possible in more intimate performances of chamber ensembles.
